FIVE GENERATIONS IN THE STEEL INDUSTRY
Simon Bluff has been working in the steel industry for over 35 years, but his connection runs much deeper. Simon can trace his family’s involvement in the steel industry back five generations. Simon’s great‑great‑grandfather, Joseph Bluff, was the first to work in the steel industry as a crucible maker. Joseph’s sons and grandsons followed him into steel, as did his great‑grandson, Simon’s father, Arnold Bluff.
In 1971, Arnold founded Taylor Forgings. The business grew steadily, soon building a reputation for quality, reliability, and extensive expertise in steel engineering.
Today, Taylor Forgings Ltd is owned by Simon and Jill Bluff. Their belief in continuous business development is reflected in their investment in three key areas.
Firstly, hiring the best people at all levels, from apprenticeships to management roles.
Secondly, having the best equipment for the job. While retaining conventional machines for heavy lifting, the
need to compete with low‑cost centres and to produce finished-machined items meant investing in CNC machinery. Six CNC machines are on site, including two state‑of‑the‑art SFM lathes with bed lengths of 5 metres and shaft diameters of 1 metre. Recent acquisitions include, in March 2023, a Dah Lih MCV‑1060 VMC and, in March 2025, a Doosan Puma 2600 SYII with live tooling and bar feed. Further investment will continue as the company grows.
Finally, the desire to bring as many operations in‑house as possible led to the purchase, in 2019, of a brand‑new 26‑tonne flatbed lorry and the launch of in‑house NDT: Taylor NDT.
It’s now over 50 years since the company was founded, and we’re already investing in the next 50 years.
